Cold Front Leads to Ice Dams
After several days of below freezing temperatures in February, the frigid weather led to the formation of numerous ice dams. What is particularly ominous about ice dams is that they are often hidden from view and difficult to discover. Ice Dams form when snow or ice accumulates on the surface of a roof and cause a "dam" at the edge of an insulated part of the roof, such as an overhang or eve. This happens as the heating system inside the home heats the attic space causing the accumulated snow and ice on the roof to melt and drip off the roof. SERVPRO of Newton / Wellesley was quickly on the scene to carefully contain the damage and remove affected dry wall. This is a timely emergency because neglected ice dams cause damage that can lead to a serious mold problem.
